Emerson’s Tavern, located at the corner of 15th and Bainbridge streets, was listed in The Negro Travelers’ Green Book. According to The John Coltrane Reference on June 17, 1948, Trane and Percy Heath stopped by Emerson’s to see saxophonist Lester Young.Emerson's TavernThe South Philly dive was the site of some of Billie Holiday’s last performances. Her gig there four months before her death is the subject of the Broadway play, “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.”
